Atheism vs. Religion: Hitchens and D’Souza to Debate
Does religion hold the keys to creating a better world or would modern society be better off without it? What does religion mean for us today? These are some of the questions Christopher Hitchens, atheist author, and Dinesh D’Souza, renowned apologist, will bring to the table Thursday evening, Sept. 17, 2009.
The event, to be held at 7pm at the “The Venue” at the University of Central Florida, promises to be both enlightening and entertaining as the speakers debate the value of religion, the existence of God, and the effects of religion on society.
Christopher Hitchens, an atheist and anti-theist, is well-known for his critique of religion, which he says is “immoral”, “mythical”, and “man-made”. He is well known for his work as a journalist and for his authorship of the controversial book “God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything”.
Dinesh D’Souza is the author of several bestsellers, including “What’s So Great About Christianity” and “The Enemy at Home: The Cultural Left and Its Responsibility for 9/11”. He uses intellectual reasoning to promote conservative values and defends traditional religious culture from a social and historical standpoint.
Both speakers are well-versed in current cultural events, and are extremely adept at addressing the challenging issues that face today’s society. Hitchens is witty, humorous, and a little daring. D’Souza is animated, polite, and occasionally mischievous.
Come expecting some surprising twists in the conversation as the two tackle the topic of religion and atheism from scientific, historical, and social perspectives.

September 18th, 2009 at 2:30 pmLast night’s debate was very entertaining, but I hoped to hear better arguments from D’Souza. Hitchens is brilliant and never disappoints even when being abrasive, but D’Souza is basically just William Paley reincarnated. His arguments were old and his replies to audience questions were not answered. He would answer a different question instead of the one he was asked. It was very sad, almost like he couldn’t make up an answer on the spot. It appeared as though all of his material was pre-determined. But I guess that’s appropriate if he’s Protestant.

Hitchens was more human than D’Souza. -

I have to say, j that I disagree with both of you. I am a Christian, but I would not defend D’souza merely because he shared my beliefs. I know that Hicthens, has made a fortune because of his dry humor, and cutting wit. However, Personally, I was no impressed with his debating skills, in general. He seemed more interested in poking fun,at something he can not hope to understand, then answering simple questions. For example, when D’souza asked if he had ever felt doubt about his beliefs he did not answer the direct question that was asked of him. D’souza was by no means great, but i believe he was a good, in the sense that he laid out the truth, without having to revert to the Bible. Because, although Christians depend on it, you can bet that when a atheist is shown the glory of God’s word, he does not understand, and tends(not in all cases though) to throw judgment down upon it. D’souza was a gentleman, while Hitchens insulted, not only D’souza but God and Christianity as well. Which I found, bold, to say the least. I would love to her your opinions…. thanks! -
